The 40-foot tall art piece is a rococo-futuristic, highly stylized vision of space. A team of artists and fabricators build a 40-foot-tall rocket ship and plan a test launch at the 2009 Burning Man project. Five Ton Crane art group’s Raygun Gothic Rocketship was spearheaded by Lead Artists Sean Orlando, Nathaniel Taylor, and David Shulman. The sculpture, by artist David Schulman of the Five Ton Crane artist cooperative in San Francisco, subsequently toured the U.S. The term was coined by William Gibson in his 1981 story " The Gernsback Continuum": Ĭohen introduced us and explained that Dialta was the prime mover behind the latest Barris-Watford project, an illustrated history of what she called "American Streamlined Modern." Raygun Gothic Rocketship was first displayed at Burning Man in May 2009. The Raygun Gothic Rocketship was originally created for the 2009 Burning Man Festival, an experiment in community and art in the Nevada desert attended annually by over 60,000 people.
The style has also been associated with architectural indulgence, and situated in the context of the golden age of modern design due to its use of features such as "single-support beams, acute angles, brightly colored paneling" as well as "shapes and cutouts showing motion". It’s difficult to grasp how awesome the Raygun Gothic Rocketship is until you actually see it in person and tour its interior.
